Second annual craft exhibition by immigrant students held at Art Base in Basalt

The exhibition opens till Dec. 20, with a reception from 5 to 7p.m.
At the Art Base, the definition of home has been explored by new students from El Salvador with artist MYXZ over the past eight week. They gave many different ideas about home and discovered found objects and stories. With their very first art class, they made a mural of ideal hometown – finish with a self-portrait and a poem, all combined into their achievements.
The students who participated in this project, are registered in the English Language Development program at Basalt High School. This program will be taught by Leticia Guzman Ingram, who was named Colorado Teacher of the Year in 2016.
Most of the students with age range from 14 to 18, arrived in US in the past few months, just started learning English and get acquainted with new life in Colorado.
“Home” – a innovative project in bid to foster community through art, welcome these immigrant students to the valley and develop bridges between two different originated residents – was introduced to the public last year at the Art Base.
During the launching, Ingram said that “Home” is a great way to express the feelings without necessarily vocalizing them. We want that the unknown will not scare them: the kids not being scared of art and the community not being scared of them.
In this exhibition, they will invite Basalt community to add their own definitions of home and identity to the mural.
The Temporary at Willits will have immigrant experience as spotlight with English In Action and Writ Large are combined to bring the live storytelling experience “Immigrant Voices” On Saturday night. Six immigrant student from 5 different countries will perform without scripts to tell stories based on their own experience of leaving home and coming here to build a new future.
